Choosing the Right CBD Medication

March 16, 2020
News

CBD medicine options have flooded the market in recent years, leaving consumers wondering about the best way to take CBD medicine. Dr. Debra Kimless, Chief Medical Officer, at Pure Green Pharmaceuticals offers her expertise on the optimal ways to consume CBD medicine.

As a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist,, Kimless focuses on holistic approaches to developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles. In beginning the use of medical CBD, she recommends starting with sublingual preparations, which are distributed through the body after dissolving under the tongue. This increases the efficacy of CBD medicines and makes it more quickly available to the body.

When choosing CBD medicines that are swallowed, Kimless says it can take 60 to 90 minutes to go through the digestive system and is only 8% bioavailable. Cases where oral CBD medicines are appropriate is for sleep aids, pain relief, and anti-inflammatory use generally because they have long lasting effects, though she still cautions patients to first build an understanding of how their bodies will respond to CBD using sublingual methods.

Vapor-based CBD medicines are increasingly popular as well and having options for consuming the CBD is beneficial, however, Kimless says there are pros and cons for each scenario. Because patients are absorbing CBD in vaping situations, the bioavailability is 50-80%, but applying heat repeatedly to oral cavities, lungs, and the tracheobronchial tree can result in cough and bronchitis.

Also in the CBD medical industry is what Kimless calls the “unsung hero of the cannabis industry,” which is topical CBD medicine. When used for pain relief, the relief comes instantly. For people with neuropathic pain, post mastectomy pain, diabetic neuropathic pain, chronic low back pain, and as a post workout recovery in athletes, the experiences have been positive.

When turning to a CBD medication, Kimless encourages patients to purchase CBD medications through reliable sources that stand by their products with a certificate of analysis.
